Carbon offset projects

Carbon offset projects are activities that result in reductions in carbon emissions. They are used to compensate for carbon emissions occurring elsewhere. Carbon reduction projects are typically segmented by how they handle emissions (avoidance, reduction or removals), and the nature of their emission reduction activities (nature based versus tech based).

  • Avoidance projects prevent the release of emissions into the atmosphere. They stop future emissions from happening.

  • Reduction projects cut down the emissions already being produced.

  • Removal projects actively extract carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in natural or engineered systems (carbon sequestration).

  • Nature-based projects protect, restore, or sustainably manage ecosystems.

  • Tech-based projects leverage technologies to avoid or remove emissions.
